My History With Porn: High-Speed Internet

Throughout my college years, and for a few years into my working life, I connected to the internet through modems, eventually getting up to 28.8 kilobits per second – much faster than I’d been connecting, but still not very fast at all. As my career took off and money started coming in regularly I was able to trade up.

I got a significant bonus at work and decided to spend it on a new computer, along with an upgrade to cable internet. Online porn was about to change drastically for me. Though I knew it was going to be dramatically faster, I was still unprepared for the first time I sat down in front of that new computer with my new cable internet connection and connected to a newsgroup to download something. I really wanted to put it to the test so I didn’t even bother with images; I went to an MP3 newsgroup and downloaded a few songs.

A few songs! It took only a couple of minutes to download all of the posts required to piece together a song that was a few megabytes. To say I was blown away would be an understatement. This was incredible! I would no longer have to be choosy about what I downloaded; I could download anything, and if I discarded something it was no big deal because the cost of having downloaded it was so low that I hadn’t really put myself out. I’d still set my computer to download things overnight, but now I was downloading dozens of images, instead of just a few. I could even download movies if I wanted, although it turned out that I still preferred downloading images.

Maybe because of the variety; I could download a few dozen images for the same “cost” as one movie, so it just made sense at the time. (The high-speed internet I was using was still slow compared to the speeds we have today.)

From this point on porn was always at my fingertips, in a way which was still somewhat cumbersome – I was still getting it through newsgroups – but much closer to what we have today. From time to time I still tried to quit, and once in awhile when I really meant it I deleted my stash, only to find myself back at it within a week downloading new stuff. I switched up newsreaders (from Forte Agent to Microsoft Outlook Express), and was sometimes enjoying the technological aspect of getting the porn almost as much as I was enjoying the porn itself.

Almost. I never masturbated to technology.
