I think I’ve written about female friendly porn before. I don’t remember what I wrote then, but my general feeling on it is that it’s probably a good idea to get more women behind the camera and into decision making roles, and this might very well result in porn that female consumers are happier with. Whether this would mean porn that looks entirely different, porn that’s essentially the same but with tweaks, or whether porn is just fine the way that it is (as far as women are concerned) I have no idea. I have a feeling that I myself might also prefer female friendly porn. At least, I might prefer it from time to time; there will still be times when I want to pull up a cumpilation and just watch women getting covered in cum, which I’m guessing wouldn’t be something that would be emphasized in the female-friendly porn world. (Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe that’s what women have been craving all this time: more pretty faces coated in semen. Though that’s not what they’re watching on PornHub.)
I don’t know how much female friendly porn gets produced, or what the level of quality is – I’ve seen some great stuff from Nubile Films, but I don’t know if that’s in the “female friendly” category or if it’s just “classy porn for men” – so I don’t know what to make of the statistic that says women are preferring to watch gay porn instead of porn which is specifically crafted for them. Is it because there’s not enough female friendly porn, so they’re just going with what they can find? Is the quality of female friendly porn so low that gay porn is the next best thing? This is more anecdotal than statistical, but I did find a female friend who consumes porn and who told me that female friendly porn is terrible; she indicated that women who don’t like porn might like female friendly porn, whereas women who do like porn wouldn’t. The conversation was cut off before we could get too deep into it, so do with that what you will.
Hell, when it comes to gay male porn maybe it has nothing to do with eroticism at all; maybe women are just curious about what two (or more) dudes do together, and they’re watching gay porn less for titillation and more for information. (But still at greater rates than they’re watching female friendly porn? And how does that explain the lesbian porn? Bi-curious? I hope so. More girls having sexy pillow fights leading to erotic experimentation can only be a good thing.)
But that being said, I don’t know anything about gay male porn because I’ve never seen any. I’ve seen a bunch of lesbian porn, so there’s that, but my assumption has always been that lesbian porn is made for men (and when women enjoy it all the better, but it wasn’t specifically made for them it was made to turn on dudes).
So is gay porn more along the lines of what women would have liked to have seen in their female friendly porn? Do porn producers approach gay porn in different ways from how they approach hetero porn, and is that something that women just happen to relate to even though they’re not the target demographic? (Interestingly, the same friend who talked to me about female friendly porn also told me that gay male porn tends to have groups of men rather than just couples, as a rule, which I found interesting. Hetero porn has group sex as well, but the vast majority seems to be focused on 2 or 3 participants rather than larger groups, which becomes its own sub-genre.) The HuffPo article posited that maybe female/female or male/male porn is less exploitative than male/female porn (where the girls are usually just sex objects rather than equal participants), and maybe that’s a valid theory, though I’ve found that HuffPo’s analysis of porn in general is usually kind of lacking. It’s like the people who write for HuffPo are the only people in the world who don’t consume porn (or they’re going out of their way to pretend they don’t).
On that last point, I’m reminded of a previous post from HuffPo (which I wrote about), in which the author wondered how any woman could like bondage porn, whereas the infographic from PornHub indicates that women prefer “rough sex” and “bondage” even more than men do!
When it comes to lesbian porn, which PornHub’s stats indicate is women’s favourite form of porn, it’s possible that one reason women like it is similar to why guys like it: women are sexy, women’s bodies are sexy, so seeing a bunch of women’s bodies together, and rubbing up against each other, is… well, it’s great. For instance, guys like boobs, and the more girls in a scene the more pairs of boobs will be in the scene. Let’s look at a simple chart which lays out the math:

That last entry is a bit skewed because once there are that many girls in a scene I tend to go cross-eyed, so I see more boobs than actually exist on the screen.
The thing about exploitation is also a possible factor, maybe even the primary one, but seeing sexy women is probably in the mix too. I’ve talked to enough women who believe the same thing that men do – women are inherently sexier than men, on a purely physical level – that I have a feeling this plays into it, on some level.
When it comes to women’s second favourite category, gay male porn, one hypothesis is that women enjoy watching male/male porn in exactly the same way that men enjoy watching lesbian porn. Guys love watching multiple girls going at it so doesn’t it follow that women would love watching multiple guys going at it? [Straight] women like cocks, so seeing multiple cocks must be even better, right? This hypothesis doesn’t ring true to me, but my female porn-enjoying friend was offline by the time I wrote this paragraph so I couldn’t run it past her. Gals, the comments are open. My guess is that the theory about exploitation is probably more relevant to this.
